NURSING EDUCATION
MISSION
The St. Philip’s College Nursing Education Department is committed to providing a quality-learning environment which fosters excellence in academic and technical achievement for students in pursuit of a nursing or healthcare profession. The department offers the following programs:
Vocational Nursing (Level 2)
LVN/Military to ADN Mobility (AAS)
Nurse Aide for Healthcare (Level 1)
PROGRAMS
VOCATIONAL NURSING PROGRAM
The Vocational Nursing Program is approved by the Texas Board of Nursing and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to award the Certificate of Completion in Vocational Nursing. The affordable one year program admits new students each fall and spring semester. The program is offered on the main campus in San Antonio either day or evening. The program is also offered in New Braunfels at the Central Texas Technology Center (CTTC) during the day only. To obtain the best learning experiences, students at either location may be required to attend class, lab, or clinical in San Antonio, New Braunfels and surrounding areas based upon class size, availability of clinical sites, etc. Due to the full-time requirement of attending classes and clinical rotations (based on 40 hour/week schedule), it is advisable to limit full-time employment while enrolled in the program. Curriculum
The curriculum encompasses courses in fundamentals of nursing, nutrition, gerontology, therapeutic communication, administration of medications, pharmacology, medical-surgical nursing, maternal/newborn nursing, nursing care of children, mental health/mental illness, professional development, and ethical/legal aspects of nursing practice.
The curriculum consists of 47 credit hours and reflects care of the client in a holistic, family-centered perspective throughout the lifespan. Instruction is based on a learner-oriented approach with application of knowledge in order to gain a thorough understanding of the instructional content presented in the classroom, lab and clinical that is required to become a knowledgeable, competent, and safe nursing care provider. In order to fulfill the curriculum requirements, students may be required to attend classes at the MLK or CTTC campus.
Clinical Requirements
In order to fulfill the clinical requirements, students are required to attend clinical rotations in San Antonio and its surrounding areas to include but not limited to New Braunfels, Seguin and San Marcos in a variety of public and private health care settings. Transportation to and from hospitals and other assigned medical facilities is the responsibility of the student. Students should be prepared to travel to any facility deemed appropriate to meet course objectives.
LVN/MILITARY to ADN MOBILITY PROGRAM
The LVN/Military to ADN Mobility Program is for students interested in upward mobility. The three (3) semester course of study is designed to prepare the graduate to function safely and effectively as a provider of care, a coordinator of care, and a member of the nursing profession. The curriculum includes a transition course as a bridge to the second year of an Associate in Applied Science in nursing, didactic and clinical nursing courses, and general education courses in selected humanities, biological, social, and physical sciences. The curriculum reflects the significant and ongoing changes in the health care delivery system. The curriculum provides a progressively more complex learning experience series to assist the student in developing problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
Admission to the LVN/Military to ADN Mobility Program occurs twice each academic year in the fall. To coordinate admissions with the Texas Board of Nursing, application deadlines for spring admission are set to accommodate Board review. There are no exceptions to the deadlines. Curriculum
The curriculum format taught is concept-based. Concept-based learning is an educational method that focuses on the big ideas and teaches students how to organize and categorize information. Content focuses on facts, while concept focuses on making sense of those facts and the world around us. Instead of the traditional method of learning, which concentrates on the ability to recall facts in isolation, concept-based learning focuses on understanding broader principles (concepts) that can be applied to a variety of specific examples.
