 EARLY CHILDHOOD and FAMILY STUDIES

In this department, students are prepared to work with children both through adolescence through the early childhood education academic unit. The NAEYC Accredited Child Development Center serves as a laboratory setting and support for student success while enrolled at the college.

EARLY CHILDHOOD AND FAMILY STUDIES DEPARTMENT

The mission of the Early Childhood and Family Studies Department will be to provide the community a student-centered comprehensive early childhood program responsive to cultural, ethnic, socio-economic diversity, rich in current and innovative ideas and nurturing authentic learning and hands-on experiences. The results are successful individuals well prepared for a variety of job opportunities in the rapidly changing early care and education profession. The department offerings include three plans leading to one (1) Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree and two (2) Certificates of Completion. One of the certificate programs incorporates a training program to meet the requirements for the Child Development Associate National Credential (CDA). All Practicum and Cooperative Education courses require a current criminal history background check, drug screening and fingerprinting. Other early childhood education settings may require additional screenings or background checks such as current PPD (Tuberculosis) screening. The department is in self-study toward the National Association for the Education of Young Children Associate Degree Accreditation.
