Internet Courses

^Top

Internet Courses are a convenient and flexible alternative for obtaining college credit.  Instead of attending regular classes on campus, students may take a college course from home, office or other convenient location using a computer with Internet access.  Students can obtain assignments and lectures at times that fit their schedules.  Internet courses are the same as other on-campus classes in academic quality, credit hours, transferability and cost.  A college faculty member is assigned to guide a student throughout the semester.

Internet Course Orientation:
Students must complete an orientation, whether online or on-campus, for each Internet course in which a student is enrolled. Most on-campus orientation sessions are approximately one hour in length and provide an opportunity for students to meet the instructor and obtain information about the Internet course, i.e., course syllabus and requirements, how to access assignments, software orientation, scheduled examinations, review sessions, etc. Students must complete an orientation for each class. See course listing for scheduled orientation times. Virtual College of Texas students MUST contact the instructor via e-mail or phone to receive assignments.

Internet Course Requirements & Skills:  Internet courses provide an alternative for the non-traditional student. The successful distance learning student must be highly motivated, self-disciplined, goal-oriented, focused and self-directed.  Students considering enrollment in an Internet course should be able to meet the following minimal technical requirements and skills.

  • Computer with minimum technical requirements
  • Internet service provider for Internet access
  • Software and skills for basic Internet navigation
  • Email account and basic email skills
  • Working knowledge of Windows environment
  • Must complete required course orientation

For further information regarding the above items, students may contact the instructor listed for each course. Additionally, students  may also visit the St. Philip’s College Center for Distance Learning site at www.alamo.edu/spc/admin/distance or call 486-2239.

Note:

  • Orientation dates, times and locations are included with each course.
  • Students must complete one orientation session for each class in which they are enrolled; otherwise you will be dropped from the class.
  • Most on-campus orientation sessions are scheduled for one hour.
  • Orientation dates and times are subject to change.  Please refer to the Distance Learning website for internet/telecourse orientation schedules (www.alamo.edu/spc/admin/distance), and/or individual course listings, or contact the instructor for orientation updates.
