Students must be officially accepted into the PTA Program before enrolling in the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTHA) courses. All PTHA courses must be taken in sequence and can be taken only in the semester listed. The general education courses can be taken prior to the designated semester of the curriculum. All courses within the PTA curriculum must be passed with a “C” or higher. Some travel might be required for clinical education outside of San Antonio. The student is responsible for travel to clinical education sites, including travel outside of San Antonio. During the clinical courses students will be onsite at the clinical for 40+ hours a week. Clinical courses range from 4 to 7 weeks in length.

The Physical Therapist Assistant program at St. Philip’s College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), 1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314; telephone: (703)-706-3245; email: website: http://www.capteonlineorg. Graduates of the program will be able to sit for the licensure exam given by the Texas State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners. The licensure exam is the responsibility of the graduate.

Application and selection criteria are subject to change. Application for the PTA program is a separate process than that of applying to the college.  Meeting minimal requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the Program. It is the students’ responsibility to check the PTA web page for updates.

Additional Program Information

The PTA Program Curriculum Plan needs to include “or higher” to follow the general education requirements for College Algebra (MATH 1314) and Freshman Composition (ENGL 1301) in the degree plan, as a higher course also meets the requirements of the degree. Currently, the process at St. Philip’s College requires a course substitution of a course equivalent to the course exactly as stated in the degree plan. Many of our students have higher level courses and may have been exempt from the requirement for these courses based on high college entrance scores. No mechanism currently exists other than direct course substitution to fulfill degree requirements. To increase efficiency in documenting students’ fulfillment of the PTA degree requirements this change should be made as soon as possible.  The recommended revision was approved by the PTA Program Advisory Committee on March 7, 2017 and by the PTA Faculty January 13, 2017. Addtionally this recommendation was discussed at the Januray 12, 2017 SPC Curriculum Committee Training Session.
