Graduates of the program are eligible to take a national examination to become a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). The national examination is administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc. (NBCOT), which can be contacted at www.nbcot.org or by writing to NBCOT, ATTN: CERTIFICATION EXAMINATION, 12 South Summit Avenue, Suite 100, Gaithersburg, MD 20877-4150 or (301) 990-7979.
Once certified, the COTA must apply to the Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners (TBOTE), 333 Guadalupe, Suite 2-510, Austin, TX 78701-3942, for a licensure to practice in the state of Texas. TOBTE’s phone number is: 512-305-6900.
Graduation, certification and licensure are separate mechanisms and are the responsibility of the individual student. It is also the students’ responsibility to check the OTA web page for updates.
All prerequisite courses and all courses required within the listed curriculum must be passed with a grade of “C” or higher. A separate application is required and can be downloaded from the Allied Health Office home page. Meeting minimal requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the Program due to limited class size. The student is responsible for travel to clinical sites.
