When you accept the challenge and responsibility for detailed analysis on blood and other body fluids that are the key to correct medical diagnosis, a career as a Medical Laboratory Technician puts you at the doctor’s right hand. The primary responsibility of the Medical Laboratory Technician is to perform analyses on blood and body fluids to enable a physician to diagnose and monitor the treatment of disease.

Students pursuing this career must possess visual acuity, manual dexterity, and adaptability in a laboratory setting. Good communication skills are also needed. After completing the required academic and medical laboratory courses, students will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree and will be eligible for any of the national certification examinations. All courses listed in the curriculum must be passed with a “C” or better.

Medical Laboratory Technician students are assigned in clinical areas where exposure to infectious and communicable diseases is common. Therefore, it is required for the safety of both the student and the patient that the following immunizations or documentation of acquired immunity are obtained:

1. Tetanus/Diphtheria Toxoid (DT)

2. Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR)

3. Hepatitis B

4. Mantoux test

5. Hepatitis A

6. Varicella (chicken pox)

Students applying for the program must also pass a background check and a drug screen.

Note:


*Both BIOL 2401 and BIOL 2402 must be completed in lieu of BIOL 2404 to satisfy program requirements.
