The program will prepare graduates for a variety of job opportunities in the rapidly changing early care and education profession. Graduates will be working with children ages 0-8, as well as their families. Completion of the following curriculum entitles students to an AAS degree in Early Childhood and Family Studies. The Early Childhood and Family Studies Associates of Applied Science degree at St. Philip’s College is accredited by the Commission on the Accrediation of Early Childhood Higher Education Programs of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The current accrediation term runs from March 2019 thorugh March 2026.

Additional Program Information


This program is designed to provide knowledge and skills for immediate workforce entry into a variety of careers in the field of early care and education.  Careers are focused on working with young children and their families.  The credits from the certificate transfer into all AAS degrees.  The AAS degree may transfer credits to other BAAS, BA or BS degrees.  Students will be required to complete a tuberculosis screening test, background check and drug screening for internship experiences.  Students enrolled in internship experiences must complete no less than 22 hours per week at an early childhood/community setting (paid or volunteer) approved by the program.

Students must contact the Student Advisor for a current degree plan to verify fulfillment of core and general education course requirements.

Effective Fall 2012, the Practicum Experiences have been replaced with an Internship. The student seeking a degree in Early Childhood and Family Studies must complete an Internship to be awarded a certificate or degree. The Internship is completed in the last semester of the program. In the semester before enrolling in the Internship, students must complete the following steps: 1) Contact the Early Childhood and Family Studies Program to enroll in the course. 2) Completed drug screening. 3) Completed criminal background check, 4) Completed tuberculosis screening. Students enrolled in Internship Courses must complete a minimum of 22 hours per week at an early childhood setting (it can be paid or volunteer) approved by the department.

^ TECA course that requires fifteen (16) hours of field experience

  • Student can do concurrent enrollment in developmental course prerequisites along with early childhood courses (CDEC/TECA).
  • Student must complete practicum experiences.
