The Allied Health programs at St. Philip’s College meet the increasing demand for manpower in the expanding healthcare industry. The programs not only prepare students to become skilled technical members of a healthcare team but also educate them to become productive and responsible citizens of the community. The programs include didactic and clinical coursework that provide students with a solid foundation and the technical skills necessary for their chosen fields. In addition, many programs include general education courses to assist in the development of a well-rounded student. The curricula are designed and sequenced to develop students’ problem-solving and critical thinking skills with progressive complexity throughout the programs. Legal/ethical issues, professionalism, and communication skills are also integrated into the curriculum.
The grading system in the Allied Health Department is different from other departments.
The grading system is:
A = 100 - 93
B = 92 - 85
C = 84 - 77
D = 76 - 70
F = 69 and under
Enrollment into the Allied Health Programs by students with felony convictions could result in denial of licensure or certification. These students would not be eligible for admission into the program until a declaratory order process is completed with the licensure and/or certification board and proof of eligibility for licensure and/or certification is provided.
Before being fully accepted into any Allied Health program, students must pass a mandatory criminal background check and drug screen (at the student’s expense).
Before beginning the clinical rotations, students must complete mandatory immunizations and will be required to carry health insurance during those semesters.
Each program has a different set of prerequisites and application procedures. It is the student’s responsibility to verify these requirements prior to submitting an application. Meeting the minimum application requirements of any program does not guarantee acceptance due to limited class sizes. The student must also meet College admissions requirements.
Clinical Experience
Selected learning experiences in one or more health care agencies (clinical settings) are planned for students in these programs as an important phase of the overall curriculum. Transportation must be arranged by the student.
Kinesiology
Kinesiology is the study of human movement. Students can take individual classes for their personal mind and body development or pursue an Associates of Arts degree plan. The activity service program is designed to allow all students to develop their physical skills and enrich their health-related knowledge.
Associates of Arts degree plan can be the stepping stone towards a wide variety of careers: teaching health and physical education, coaching, athletic training, personal training, recreation specialist, physical and occupational therapy and a host of other health professions. Additional advanced coursework is necessary for entry into these careers.
