Workforce Development and Continuing Education


Within the framework of the College’s philosophy, mission, and goals, and in cooperation with government and military agencies, Continuing Education provides education, training, and employment programs. In addition, seminars, workshops, conferences, and certification updates are provided for community organizations, business, industry, military, and professional groups. A Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is the basic unit of measurement for an individual’s participation in the College’s offerings of non-credit classes, courses, and programs. A CEU is defined as ten (10) contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction.

Continuing Education has the flexibility and technology to respond rapidly to the needs of the  community and to implement courses in programmatic areas, such as adult basic education, internet, allied health, business, industry, and social services. Continuing Education also serves as an outreach mechanism for directing  prospective students into appropriate credit programs within the College. Bringing the College into the community by using satellite locations, St. Philip’s College Continuing Education offers a wide variety of short, non-traditional courses  independent of the credit certificate or degree programs.

Vocational/Technical - Occupational courses, seminars, and workshops provide opportunities to refresh knowledge or gain specific skills for job preparation. Available courses focus on computers, business and office skills, industrial, health careers, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), automotive trades, construction trades, energy, welding, manufacturing and technical skills, medical profession skills, and other areas of emphasis for professionals.

Classes in Self-Improvement and Personal Development - Students may learn more about ESL, receive their GED, receive a real estate license, and develop leadership skills, among other topics.  Students may also enroll in classes designed to develop basic reading, writing, and math skills.

Leisure Time,  Special  Interest  Courses for Hobbies, Recreation, and Diversion - Cabinet making to zumba dance classes.

Learning  Opportunities Designed for Groups with Special Needs - Older adults, women, businesses and organizations, and summer youth groups.

Workforce Development - Proactively collaborate with business community, governmental entities, non-profit organizations, and other educational institutions to provide customized training and opportunities for adults and youth to develop knowledge and skills that will provide access to job opportunities career advancement, or on-the-job-training.  The department provides proposal development; application process; grant management and compliance training; contract process and approval; budget approvals; and grant negotiations and process.  Call (210) 486-2400 for more information

English as a Second Language (ESL)

If you or someone you know is interested in learning English, our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are affordable and effective. In these classes, students learn how to use English in their everyday work lives, communicating with co-workers with a better vocabulary and more confidence.
Rather than blending students of various skill levels in one class, we place students in our classes as a result of their ESL ACCUPLACER placement exam scores. This results in classes that are better-targeted to their respective students. Our patient but challenging instructors then work with students in the classroom setting to help them reach their language goals.
Please call or come by our office so that we may provide you with a test authorization. You will then take your free ESL ACCUPLACER test. Once you have your scores, we will guide you to the right enrollment option for you. For more information, please contact our office. ONLINE GED PREPARATION—EFFECTIVE AND FLEXIBLE!    

Our online GED preparation materials are inexpensive, and you will be able to work on building your GED skills from the comfort of your own home or from any place where you can access the internet. 
 
How online GED preparation works: 
  1. You sign up and pay your $65 fee; 
  2. Once you have paid for access to the online materials, you will be given two items—an official GED practice test (provided to you via email or regular mail),  and a log-in code which will allow you to access the online class information; 
  3. You will take the practice test on your own, then submit your answers to the online scoring service available for the class; 
  4. Once your scores have been calculated, you may begin studying and preparing online for your GED!

Grant Writing Courses
At a time when non-profit organizations and private individuals are scrambling to find funding for a variety of important programs, grant writing classes are especially helpful and could make the difference between suffering through a frustrating search for funds and benefitting from a strong financial situation. St. Philip’s College offers classes for anyone interested in learning about the grant writing process.  Each class is taught by a highly-experienced instructor whose expertise includes extensive knowledge of and experience with the grant-writing process as well as in the administration of grant-funded programs. 
 
Online Enrichment
St. Philip’s College is excited to offer you the option of online courses for your professional and personal enrichment!  Whether you would like to improve your computer skills, learn how to write fiction, become certified in alternative medicine, or train in a specific occupational field, we have online courses for you.
 
Wine and Food Pairing - Basic  
You will gain a solid understanding of the role of taste when making food and wine matches, basic wine knowledge including how wine is made, the effects of geography of wine flavors, and why wine is food. You will also gain a practical understanding of why different wines work with different foods.
 
Wine and Food Pairing - Advanced
This 3-part series is an exploration of the nature of taste, wine and food pairing. In this class we’ll train your senses to understand the subtle reasons why some flavors work together and others do not. Then we’ll examine the way wine and food pairings are altered by cooking methods, textures and sauces. Lastly, we’ll Go Texan by focusing on Texas wines and how to get ranch food to go with wine.
 
Leadership Management Certification Program
Grounded in both research and practice from successful quality-based organizations, the 32 hour Leadership Management Certification Program focuses on developing leadership capability. The four program modules are designed to build upon each other, therefore the first two modules are prerequisites for modules 3 and 4.
 
Paralegal Certificate Course  
This 240-hour certification program is designed for beginners and advanced legal workers alike. Each student is trained to assist trial attorneys, interview witnesses, investigate complex fact patterns, research the law and assist in preparing courtroom litigation cases. The certification methodology is structured to allow students to familiarize themselves with practices related to those areas of law in which legal assistants are most in demand. Students will increase their office efficiency and productivity, and learn new marketable job skills. This non-credit program will award successful graduates a Certificate of Completion from St. Philip’s College, Division of Workforce Development and Continuing Education.
 
Real Estate Program
This program meets the educational requirements established by the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) for becoming a licensed real estate agent. Upon completion of this intensive training, participants will have the skills and knowledge necessary for passing the TREC licensing exam. A sales license in real estate can be obtained, as stipulated by the Texas Real Estate Commission, only when an individual has completed 180 hours of course work.

We offer the Real Estate Program at our San Antonio campus and in New Braunfels at the Central Texas Technology Center.
 
 
CE Health Career
 
Through the Division of Workforce Development and Continuing Education, St. Philip’s College provides health career and hospitality training programs. We are often the first step for individuals looking to enter the healthcare field for the first time. In addition to basic training programs in a variety of healthcare disciplines, St. Philip’s College also offers update classes to healthcare professionals with licenses that require yearly continuing education hours to maintain such certifications.

Certified Nurse Aide
This is a 108-hour course that includes lecture and clinical components, and prepares students to take the state of Texas examination to become a Certified Nurse Aide by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services. This program prepares students to become entry-level nursing assistants by achieving a level of knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to provide safe care to the residents of long term care facilities/nursing homes. Some of the topics include: patient comfort and safety, range of motion for long term care residents, communication skills, basic nursing skills, residents’ rights, etc. This training program is licensed by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services.
 
Medication Aide
This 144-hour course prepares students to take the State of Texas examination to become a licensed Medication Aide by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services. Instructions and preparation on the administration of medications is the focus of this course. Medication Aide Updates are also available.
 
Medication Aide Update
The Medication Administration Update is an 8-hour continuing education update that entails training in an identified area(s) to meet continuing education and/or review/update requirements associated with professional licensure or certification. Topics include review and update of Medication Aide training rules, medication administration, and related responsibilities.
 
Massage Therapy - Certificate of Completion
The 500-hour Massage Therapy Program is a series of courses that prepare the student to take the national exam to become a Licensed Massage Therapist. Students learn about anatomy, physiology, massage therapy fundamentals, kinesiology, health and hygiene, pathology, business practices, professional ethics, therapeutic modalities, and they complete a 50-hour internship under the supervision of a Licensed Massage Therapist.
The program is comprised of nine different classes, or modalities, and after successful completion of all nine classes, you are eligible to take the national exam.
 
Nursing Home Activity Director
This is 232-hour certification course that includes 120 hours of classroom training and 112-hour practicum. A Nursing Home Activity Director manages a wide range of activities to promote and stimulate the physical and emotional health of the nursing facility resident. Activity Director Updates are also available.
 
Nursing Home Activity Director Update
The Nursing Home Activity Director Update is an 8-hour continuing education update allowing the Activity Director to keep their certification current. It is an overview of current information pertinent to skills, theory, psychology, and record keeping. Students completing this class will be able to describe the revisions to the state record keeping system as they apply to the Activity Director and define all changes in law related to Nursing Home Activity Directors.
 
Medical Terminology
This 48-hour class studies medical terminology, word origin, structure, and application of medical terms. Students enrolled in the course will learn to define, pronounce, and spell medical terms as a result of learning to build and analyze terms through the introduction of prefixes, suffixes, root words, plurals, abbreviations and symbols. This class is ideal for:
  • Nursing or Allied Health students looking to gain extra competence in this area
  • Students who want a head start before applying for a Nursing or Allied program
  • Individuals who need a refresher before re-entering the workforce in a medical related career field
  • Currently employed medical staff members who seek formal training in medical terminology
 
Spanish for Healthcare Providers
Develop your Spanish speaking skills to improve effective communication between yourself and your patients.

This 40-hour Spanish for Healthcare Providers class will focus on developing practical Spanish communication skills including medical terminology, greetings, common expressions, commands, and phrases normally used in a healthcare setting.
 
CPR/First Aid
This course is designed for a wide variety of healthcare providers who seek instruction in lifesaving skills of respiratory and cardiac emergencies involving adults, children, and infants. This class is ideal for licensed healthcare providers, non-licensed healthcare providers, nursing students, or other individuals in the healthcare field.

Professional Truck Driving
Secure the necessary skills and training to secure employment in the oil industry along with major-over-the road carriers by obtaining a Texas CDL in a matter of a few short weeks.
St. Philip’s College and SAGE Corporation have partnered together in order to offer a quality 156-clock hour training program designed to exceed the standard certification for entry level truck drivers. Students will learn Tractor Trailer vehicle systems, Department of Transportation (DOT) rules and regulations, and logs and legal topics pertaining to safe operations. Additional topics include cargo handling, hazardous materials and the vehicle pre-trip inspection and students will receive a defensive driving course. All qualified applicants must at least be 21 years of age, have the ability to comprehend the English language sufficient to meet Department of Transportation regulations and pass a DOT physical exam as well as meet the Motor Carrier Safety Regulations; Qualification of Drivers. Tuition includes books and lab fees.

Basic Refinishing
An introduction to current refinishing products, shop safety, and equipment used in the automotive refinishing industry. Emphasis on surface preparation, masking techniques, and refinishing of trim and replacement parts.
Collision Repair Shop Management
A study of methods and equipment used in collision repair shops to improve management functions and profitability.
Special Topics in Automotive Body Repair

Structural Analysis and Damage Repair V
Advanced development in the operation of equipment and the procedures involved in the repair of body structures. Special emphasis on conducting a thorough damage analysis as well as demonstrating proper pulling and anchoring techniques.
Major Collision Repair and Panel Replacement
Instruction in preparation of vehicles for major repair processes. This course covers interpreting information from damage reports, planning repair sequences, selecting appropriate tools, and organizing removed parts for reinstallation.
Advance Refinishing
Skill development in multi-stage refinishing including techniques. Further development in identification of problems and development of solutions in color matching and partial panel refinishing.
Specialized Refinishing Techniques

Basic Electrical Theory

Intro to Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM)
A study of Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software which is used to develop applications for manufacturing. Emphasis on tool geometry, tool selection, and the tool library.
Machinist I
An introductory course that assists the student in understanding the machinist occupation in industry. The student begins by using basic machine tools such as the lathe, milling machine, drill press, power saw, and bench grinder. Machine terminology, theory, math, part layout, and bench work using common measuring tools is included. Emphasis is placed on shop safety, housekeeping, and preventative maintenance.
Fundamentals of CNC Machine Controls
An introduction to G and M codes (RS274-D) necessary to program Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machines.
Advanced CNC Machining
The study of advanced CNC operation with an emphasis on programming and operations of machining and turning centers.

English as a Second Language (ESL)
If you or someone you know is interested in learning English, our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are affordable and effective. In these classes, students learn how to use English in their everyday work lives, communicating with co-workers with a better vocabulary and more confidence.
Rather than blending students of various skill levels in one class, we place students in our classes as a result of their ESL ACCUPLACER placement exam scores. This results in classes that are better-targeted to their respective students. Our patient but challenging instructors then work with students in the classroom setting to help them reach their language goals.
Please call or come by our office so that we may provide you with a test authorization. You will then take your free ESL ACCUPLACER test. Wine and Food Pairing - Basic  
You will gain a solid understanding of the role of taste when making food and wine matches, basic wine knowledge including how wine is made, the effects of geography of wine flavors, and why wine is food. You will also gain a practical understanding of why different wines work with different foods.
 
Wine and Food Pairing - Advanced
This 3-part series is an exploration of the nature of taste, wine and food pairing. In this class we’ll train your senses to understand the subtle reasons why some flavors work together and others do not. Then we’ll examine the way wine and food pairings are altered by cooking methods, textures and sauces. Lastly, we’ll Go Texan by focusing on Texas wines and how to get ranch food to go with wine.
 
Leadership Management Certification Program
Grounded in both research and practice from successful quality-based organizations, the 32 hour Leadership Management Certification Program focuses on developing leadership capability. The four program modules are designed to build upon each other, therefore the first two modules are prerequisites for modules 3 and 4.
 
Paralegal Certificate Course  
This 240-hour certification program is designed for beginners and advanced legal workers alike. Each student is trained to assist trial attorneys, interview witnesses, investigate complex fact patterns, research the law and assist in preparing courtroom litigation cases. The certification methodology is structured to allow students to familiarize themselves with practices related to those areas of law in which legal assistants are most in demand. Students will increase their office efficiency and productivity, and learn new marketable job skills. This non-credit program will award successful graduates a Certificate of Completion from St. Philip’s College, Division of Workforce Development and Continuing Education.
 
Real Estate Program
This program meets the educational requirements established by the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) for becoming a licensed real estate agent. Upon completion of this intensive training, participants will have the skills and knowledge necessary for passing the TREC licensing exam. A sales license in real estate can be obtained, as stipulated by the Texas Real Estate Commission, only when an individual has completed 180 hours of course work.

We offer the Real Estate Program at our San Antonio campus and in New Braunfels at the Central Texas Technology Center.

Certified Nurse Aide
This is a 108-hour course that includes lecture and clinical components, and prepares students to take the state of Texas examination to become a Certified Nurse Aide by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services. This program prepares students to become entry-level nursing assistants by achieving a level of knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to provide safe care to the residents of long term care facilities/nursing homes. Some of the topics include: patient comfort and safety, range of motion for long term care residents, communication skills, basic nursing skills, residents’ rights, etc. This training program is licensed by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services.
 
Medication Aide
This 144-hour course prepares students to take the State of Texas examination to become a licensed Medication Aide by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services. Instructions and preparation on the administration of medications is the focus of this course. Medication Aide Updates are also available.
 
Medication Aide Update
The Medication Administration Update is an 8-hour continuing education update that entails training in an identified area(s) to meet continuing education and/or review/update requirements associated with professional licensure or certification. Topics include review and update of Medication Aide training rules, medication administration, and related responsibilities.
 
Massage Therapy - Certificate of Completion
The 500-hour Massage Therapy Program is a series of courses that prepare the student to take the national exam to become a Licensed Massage Therapist. Students learn about anatomy, physiology, massage therapy fundamentals, kinesiology, health and hygiene, pathology, business practices, professional ethics, therapeutic modalities, and they complete a 50-hour internship under the supervision of a Licensed Massage Therapist.
The program is comprised of nine different classes, or modalities, and after successful completion of all nine classes, you are eligible to take the national exam.
 
Nursing Home Activity Director
This is 232-hour certification course that includes 120 hours of classroom training and 112-hour practicum. A Nursing Home Activity Director manages a wide range of activities to promote and stimulate the physical and emotional health of the nursing facility resident. Activity Director Updates are also available.
 
Nursing Home Activity Director Update
The Nursing Home Activity Director Update is an 8-hour continuing education update allowing the Activity Director to keep their certification current. It is an overview of current information pertinent to skills, theory, psychology, and record keeping. Students completing this class will be able to describe the revisions to the state record keeping system as they apply to the Activity Director and define all changes in law related to Nursing Home Activity Directors.
 
Medical Terminology
This 48-hour class studies medical terminology, word origin, structure, and application of medical terms. Students enrolled in the course will learn to define, pronounce, and spell medical terms as a result of learning to build and analyze terms through the introduction of prefixes, suffixes, root words, plurals, abbreviations and symbols. This class is ideal for:

Professional Truck Driving
Secure the necessary skills and training to secure employment in the oil industry along with major-over-the road carriers by obtaining a Texas CDL in a matter of a few short weeks.
St. Philip’s College and SAGE Corporation have partnered together in order to offer a quality 156-clock hour training program designed to exceed the standard certification for entry level truck drivers. Students will learn Tractor Trailer vehicle systems, Department of Transportation (DOT) rules and regulations, and logs and legal topics pertaining to safe operations. Additional topics include cargo handling, hazardous materials and the vehicle pre-trip inspection and students will receive a defensive driving course. All qualified applicants must at least be 21 years of age, have the ability to comprehend the English language sufficient to meet Department of Transportation regulations and pass a DOT physical exam as well as meet the Motor Carrier Safety Regulations; Qualification of Drivers. Tuition includes books and lab fees.

Advanced Oxy Fuel Welding and Cutting
A study of all position welding on ferrous and nonferrous metals using oxy-fuel welding process, including welding and cutting, brazing, and soldering operations.  
Advanced Shielded Metal Arc Welding
Advanced topics based on accepted welding codes. Training provided with various electrodes in shielded metal arc welding processes with open V-groove joints in all positions.  
Intro to Layout and Fabrication
A fundamental course in layout and fabrication related to the welding industry. Major emphasis on structural shapes and use in construction.  
Intro to Welding Fundamentals
An introduction to the fundamentals of equipment used in oxy-fuel and arc welding, including welding and cutting safety, basic oxy-fuel welding and cutting, basic arc welding processes and basic metallurgy.
Intro to Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)
A study of the principles of gas metal arc welding, setup and use of Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) equipment, and safe use of tools/equipment. Instruction in various joint designs.  
Intro to Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)
An introduction to the principles of gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), setup/use of GTAW equipment, and safe use of tools and equipment. Welding instruction in various positions on joint designs.  
Advanced Layout and Fabrication
An advanced course in layout and fabrication. Includes production and fabrication of layout, tools, and processes. Emphasis on application of fabrication and layout skills.  
Advanced Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)
Advanced topics in Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). Includes welding in various positions and directions.  
Advanced Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)
Advanced topics in GTAW welding, including welding in various positions and directions.  
Advanced Pipe Welding
Advanced topics involving welding of pipe using the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process. Topics include electrode selection, equipment setup, and safe shop practices. Emphasis on weld positions 5G and 6G using various electrodes.
